About the National Conference:
Facing Diversity: Leveling the Playing Field in the Photographic Arts
47th SPE National Conference
March 4-7, 2010 in Philadelphia, PA
This is a tremendous time for diversity. The United States has seen her first president of color sworn into office, and Iceland has just elected the world’s first openly gay prime minister. Yet ask a photography student for the names of five photographers of diverse backgrounds and they will probably fumble. Just as in political life, the demographics of diversity are also shifting in the photographic arts, but this diversity is slow to make its way into galleries, textbooks, and the awareness of those in the industry.
SPE’s 47th National Conference in Philadelphia, “Facing Diversity: Leveling the Playing Field in the Photographic Arts,” will examine how photographers of diverse backgrounds participate in the art world today and how these artists are being received. The conference will look at inclusivity, diversity within diversity, and the various perspectives on the changing cultural dynamics of this country. It strives to bring together curious minds in celebration of the achievements by artists of all backgrounds.
For photographic educators, artists and scholars, the conference programming will:
• Discuss what diversity means within the framework of photography
• Examine how artists have expressed themselves on the topics of race, culture, ethnicity, religion, class, gender, sexual preference, and age
• Identify how these issues are being discussed in the art world and in the classroom today
• Investigate the vocabulary required to discuss diversity in the arts today

About the City:
Philadelphia, the “City of Brotherly Love,” is an ideal setting for this conference’s theme, as the city received its name from one of its most famous citizens, William Penn, who saw his tract of land as a place where people from every background could live together in peace and harmony. Philadelphia is known for its historical landmarks and cultural riches, ranging from the Liberty Bell to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The conference hotel, the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, is conveniently set in a very walkable downtown area that provides a wealth of art venues, restaurants, and shopping.
About the 2010 Conference:
The Philadelphia conference marks a unique partnership between SPE and EnFoco to better address issues of diversity within the field of photography. En Foco is a non-profit photography organization dedicated to nurturing and supporting photographers of diverse cultures, primarily those of Latino, African and Asian heritage, and Native Peoples of the Americas and Pacific. www.enfoco.org

Two months ago I decided to embark on a 50 state Arts in Crisis Tour. The purpose of this tour was to talk about the issues facing arts organizations in the current economic environment and to discuss ways to address these challenges. As I planned the tour, I thought I would visit the biggest city in every state. I believed, erroneously, that this would give me exposure to the most arts organizations and managers. Then I received a letter from Jim McIntyre, a board member of the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo, asking me to visit his city. Like other cities in Michigan, Kalamazoo has been hard hit by the recession and many arts organizations there are struggling. Jim had another compelling reason for asking me to visit Kalamazoo; his children had attended my sister’s school, Bread and Roses, decades ago and he remained a close friend of my sister Susan. ….

KALAMAZOO–Western Michigan University classes will be canceled from 1:45 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, to allow the campus community to participate in a celebration of the life of President Emeritus Diether H. Haenicke, which has been scheduled for 2:30 p.m. that day in WMU’s Miller Auditorium.
Classes will be held as scheduled from 8 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. Classes that begin at 5 p.m. or later will be held as scheduled. In addition, many parts of the campus will close during that period, as supervisors are asked to offer employees an opportunity to attend the Haenicke service as University operations permit. While most offices will be closed during the period, operations will continue in University Libraries, food services, computing centers, public safety and other essential service areas as defined by individual University vice presidents.
“Students and their welfare were at the very core of Diether H. Haenicke’s life and career,” notes WMU President John M. Dunn. “No celebration of his presidency would be complete without the opportunity for students to attend. We also wish to honor the longtime relationship Dr. Haenicke had with colleagues on campus by giving those whose lives he touched an opportunity to honor his memory.”
Students who have questions about the closing and how it will affect them should check with their instructors.
The memorial event at Miller Auditorium will be immediately followed with a reception in the Richmond Center for Visual Arts. Additional details about the event and information on live broadcasts will be available closer to Feb. 26.
