  1. The interesting thing about Riis is that he never called himself a photographer. He used photography as a means to an end. He needed to document the conditions in tenants in New York and had no other way of doing it besides taking photos himself. He would catch people off guard and take a photograph. In this image it is very clear that he never really gave his subjects much warning before he snapped an image. These are very powerful images which effectively convey the conditions of tenants in New York during this time.
