Inspired by his experiences as a graphic designer, Reed’s work tests the power of impressions that shape our emotions and experiences. This is apparent in the optimism MetroCard, one of the world’s largest—yet quietest—public arts projects. In collaboration with New York’s MTA Arts for Transit 30,000,000 MetroCards were distributed to passengers of the New York City transit system featuring a single printed word floating unexpectedly and occasionally serendipitously on the back. Originally developed as a project Reed undertook in college, the cards were released following the onset of the global economic crisis.
That a piece by Reed Seifer can be large as well as quiet nicely speaks to his fascination with dualities. In his varied work, it is not unusual to find a simultaneous yes and no and for messages to hold the ability to be read both ways. Similarly his work is often composed of the familiar and unfamiliar: anything and everything from paint and poetry to salt, currency, or even our own memories.
Born on Fifth Avenue in New York City, raised in Connecticut and currently residing in Brooklyn, Reed received his BFA from Clark University. He also studied at École Parsons à Paris, and was the recipient of the Clare Woolrich Fellowship at Columbia University, School of Writing. In addition to being the recipient of an MTA Arts for Transit Commission, Reed exhibited in a solo booth an invited artist at The Armory Show 2010 and 2011. His work has been included in group exhibitions at the Paula Cooper Gallery, HERE, ISCP, Printed Matter, and Proteus Gowanus in New York; The Hunt Gallery at Webster University, St Louis; and Huize Frankendael, Amsterdam.
